The Predator Official Trailer and Thoughts

It’s been 8 years since we last saw the Predator in his own movie. Finally after all these years we get another stand alone Predator movie appropriately titled The Predator. I can’t tell you how excited I’ve been for this movie especially knowing that the original screen writer Shane Black signed on to write the script for this movie. We’ve been given movie posters, screen shots, and a trailer teaser but for a big Predator fan like myself all I’ve wanted to see is how he was going to look in this movie. Thankfully I have to say that this new Predator’s armor, weapons and mask look completely bad ass. However as for the movie it’s self, that might be another story.

From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.

The above quote is the official description for this new movie and there is so much wrong with it that I don’t even know where to begin. So no we have more advanced Yautja (Predators) coming to earth but a “rag tag” group of ex soldiers, a teacher, and a kid are going to take them down? Also when have the Yautja ever been out to destroy the human race? The way it has always been written in their history and extended universe is that Earth and other planets are more like a game reserve for them. They come here to hunt and test their skills against intelligent and dangerous creatures. They live to hunt and do battle, not destroy planets or it’s inhabitants.

Now as excited as I have been for this film to come out I’m not so sure I feel the same way now that I’ve seen the trailer. Once again this just looks like a summer action movie rather than a science fiction, horror movie. In the first film part of what made it so good and such a classic was the mystery and suspense leading up to the reveal of the actual Predator.  In this one they’ve already shown him several times basically ruining an sense of mystery about the Predator. I think a small glimpse and different tone in the trailer would have made me more excited to see this. Also this trailer looks a lot like Alien vs Predator: Requiem. Just go back and watch that trailer and I’m sure you’ll see several things that look strikingly similar.

All in all I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed with the way this movie is looking. I really thought we were going to see this franchise go back to its roots, delivering something that would be mysterious, suspenseful and even terrifying at some points. Instead this looks like just another mindless summer block buster with the Predator thrown into it. I hope I’m wrong about this but of course only time will tell.
