Mantis gives his thoughts on Sea of Thieves

So last week we finally saw the release of the much anticipated open world, pirate game, Sea of Thieves. Sea of Thieves is of course a Microsoft exclusive and is developed by the British game developer Rare. It was first announced at E3 2015 and ever since then it has been on my list of games that I have been most excited for. My original plan was to get it on my Xbox One but last year I built myself a pretty sweet gaming PC and decided to get the game for PC instead. The great thing is that this game is cross compatible and I am able to play with my friends on Xbox just as easily as I can with my friends that game on PC. I was so excited for this game to come out, but now that it’s out and I’ve played it for a while, I am feeling a bit underwhelmed.

First off I just want to say that I don’t hate this game. I see it being compared to No Man’s Sky and I think that is a little unfair. So far I’ve put about 10 hours into Sea of Thieves (not including the beta) and I just wanted to give you my thoughts on it thus far. Like most people the first thing that I noticed about the game are the amazing looking environments. The art style is unique, the open world sandbox feels very inviting, and the water effects are gorgeous. The thought of being a pirate sailing the open seas with your friends is what sold this game for me and as it stands is the best part about the game. So be warned that if you are planning on playing this alone then you will most likely get bored very easily. The character customization is pretty disappointing since you only get to choose from some randomly generated pirates. You do get to customize your character with different clothes and hair later on, but it all costs in game currency.

Every time you fire up the game you will spawn at an outpost on an island that feels very lonely. There are only a handful of npcs (none playable characters) and all of them have a specific purpose like buying/selling items, and handing out quests. Other than that there is really no life on these islands except for the occasional player and some random animals. It feels pretty dead even when you have 3 other players with you. It would be nice to see at least a few other npcs walking around going about their daily business. There is even a tavern that you can go into and drink grog until you throw up, but the tavern is void of people other than the npc behind the bar. There are even several tables with chairs placed around them but the place is completely lacking any life. Aside from that there are only 3 different types of traders to get missions from at these outposts, and they will have you doing one of three things; Finding treasure, fighting skeletons, or finding supplies….That’s it.

At first this can be exciting because you aren’t sure what adventures await you, but after you’ve played through these missions a few times it becomes very lack luster and repetitive. There is only one type of enemy AI which are the skeletons on various islands (not all islands have skeletons). Once you’ve fought one then you’ve pretty much fought them all. There really is no variation in them. Honestly, the most excitement you will have in this game is encountering other players, and battling it out in some ship to ship combat. However, even that gets boring after a while because players just re spawn a short while later with a new ship and come back for their revenge. Eventually it just becomes a grind and unless they have treasure on their ship there is no benefit to doing this. No reputation points are earned to increase your status as a pirate, or player progression given. Even the things you can buy which are all purely cosmetic (including weapons) cost so much money that you’ll have to grind for hours and hours through repetitive missions just to get enough money for something you want.

I’m not saying this is a bad game, but I don’t think it is currently worth the $60 price tag. Sea of Thieves had and in many ways still has so much potential but as it stands right now, it’s mainly a disappointment to me. Don’t get me wrong I have had a lot of fun playing this game with my friends, but we have already reached the limitations of this game. We have done every mission type there is to do, fought every enemy type in the game, battled other players, bought in game items, and sailed to many of the islands on the map. We even reached the edge of the map and watched our ship sink which is entertaining only once. The one thing we haven’t done is fight the Kraken and even that has no reward for beating it. The fun that I have had playing this game was really because of my friends. Without them I don’t think I would have liked this game at all. My only hope is that Rare brings more content to this game quickly and finds a way to add more life to it. Right now its starting to feel very boring and definitely underwhelming.

Only time will tell if this game can find it’s way out from under this lack luster start but what do you think about it Nerd Nation? As always we want to hear your thoughts on this. Have you been playing Sea of Thieves and have you been enjoying? If so, what do you like about it and if not, what do you think Rare can do to fix it? Be sure to let me know what you think by leaving me your thoughts in a comment below, on the Facebook page, or hit me up on the Twitter page @Nerdgasmneeds.
