Sony Getting Ready to Screw Up Venom

Last week Sony announced that they will be moving forward with plans to produce a stand alone Venom movie that will be the catalyst for an entire Marvel themed, cinematic universe. Currently Sony owns the movie rights to many Marvel characters and they want to cash in on the popularity of them before it is too late. However, as a fan I think I would much rather see them give the rights back to Marvel instead of making another terrible flop like the Fantastic Four, Spider-man 3 (which contained a terrible Venom) or all of the Amazing Spider-Man movies.

There has been a surge of interest in creating more R rated super hero movies especially after the success of films like Deadpool and Logan. However, in my opinion Sony is already going about it the wrong way because they are completely ignoring the source material, and creating a cinematic universe around a group of movies that no one asked for. They have stated that Venom will have an R rating and will be followed up by a Black Cat and Silver Sable movie. The only problem with this plan is that it will have no ties to Spider-Man or the MCU.

All 3 of those characters originated in Spider-Man comics and even their origin stories have strong ties to the web head. Sony plans on creating an entire movie universe around these characters but doesn’t want to include their main protagonist. In my opinion this is just another attempt at cashing in on the popularity of Marvel characters without actually giving the fans what they want. Whoever is in charge over at Sony Pictures is laughably out of touch with the fan base. As you would expect, the response to these decisions has been largely negative.

Only time will tell what kind of movies we will be getting from Sony but I personally have no interest in seeing a Venom, Black Cat or Silver Sable movie that has no ties to Spider-Man. Our only hope now is that someone at Sony comes to their senses and finds a way to tie them in with the Spider-Man movies, or these movies flop at the box office and they are forced to give the rights back to Marvel.
