Ever since we got our first dark and cryptic glimpse of the upcoming Disney Pixar movie Cars 3, we have had a lot of questions. What happened to Lightning McQueen and who are some of these other cars that we haven’t seen before? Well Disney has been kind enough to finally introduce us to some of the new generation of Race Cars that will be competing against Lightning on the race track. I have to admit that one car in particular looks pretty awesome and his name ain’t Lightning McQueen…
The Cars franchise will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first movie that my son was really attached to when he was little. He watched the first one over and over again like most kids do, and had all the toys to go with it. Now he’s older and the new premise for Cars 3 really starts to hit home when you realize that Lightning McQueen isn’t young anymore and is actually going through what is being described as a mid-life crisis. NEW millennial cars have entered the racing circuit that are much younger and faster than him.
“McQueen is not the young hotshot anymore, the kid he was back then in Cars 1,” says first-time Pixar director Brian Fee, a storyboard artist on the first two Cars films and the man entrusted by story guru/Cars whisperer John Lasseter to take the wheel. “He’s in the middle of his life, and as an athlete, that’s getting up there. You have your whole life ahead of you, yet your career is starting to show its age. He’s looking in the mirror and realizing, ‘I’m 40 years old,’ and dealing with the fact that the thing that you love more than anything else, you might not be able to do forever.”
