Star Trek 50th Anniversary Beer
Today is a very special day where we nerds celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of science fictions most beloved franchises. Of course I am talking about Gen Roddenberry’s Star Trek universe. Star Trek has been adapted to countless TV shows, movies, games, toys and just about every other kind of entertainment there is. Half a century is no small feet so what better way is there to celebrate than with a customary beverage? In this case that customary beverage just so happens to be a 50th anniversary golden ale.
The Star Trek Golden Anniversary Ale was created by Shmaltz brewing and was brewed right here in the United States. This ale was created especially for Star Trek fans and even has a nod to the famous “Trouble with Tribbles” episode from the original series. Shmaltz Brewing has been around since 1996 and started their operation in San Francisco. They are now based out of Clifton Park, NY. Here is a little bit of what Shmaltz Lead Brewer Drew Schmidt had to say about the Star Trek Ale;
“Light Carastan malt gives some residual sweetness in the form of very light toffee. A dose of Munich adds a slight bready quality, and wheat malt lends to a slight crisp character. Mashing at a moderate temperature gives this beer a medium body. In keeping with the intergalactic theme, hopping is comprised of Comet, Polaris, Aurora and Admiral (Kirk) hops. This beer is only loosely filtered to clarity, in order to preserve the ambiguity of good and evil.”

As of right now I don’t think this beer is available in the western part of the US but if you live on the east coast you might be in luck. So what do you think of this Star Trek beer Nerd Nation? Does it sound like something you would like to try or just another novelty beer?
