Disney’s The Rocketeer Reboot
Disney has officially confirmed that they will be bringing back the Rocketeer. The original Rocketeer movie was released by Disney all the way back in 1991 and I remember seeing it as a kid. Honestly I am not really surprised that Disney is bringing it back and rebooting the somewhat forgotten action/adventure movie. It was honestly only a matter of time especially with the recent success of reboots like The Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. However, what is surprising is that the lead character will not be Cliff Secord who was the main protagonist from the original comic and movie, instead the new Rocketeer will be an un-named African-American female pilot.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The project, in the early development stages, is considered a sequel-reboot and, in a modern-day twist, will be headlined by a black female character.” Apparently this new movie will take place only 6 years after the original. Although I like the idea of bringing back the Rocketeer I feel like Disney is running out of original ideas. They are literally taking Marvel’s change to the Iron Man comic and using it for this movie reboot. I personally welcome the opportunity to enjoy a movie with a Black Female lead, but I think it would be a lot more interesting if they actually created original roles for them instead of changing established characters. So far there has been no projected release date given for the Rocketeer reboot.
I know that I’ve talked about this before, but I hate when Hollywood thinks that they are being progressive by changing the race or gender (in this case both) of a character for the sake of diversity. The worst part is that the media eats it up, hails them as heroes, and those of us who aren’t on board with it are labeled racists or bigots. I am actually of Native American and Mexican descent and it has never once bothered me about the lack of either race being cast as super heroes. Instead of giving Rocketeer fans what they want, Disney has decided to take a character that is loved by many and changed their race and gender for the sole purpose of showing how diverse they are. Not only that but it is just plain lazy. Don’t buy into this stuff Nerd Nation, but instead demand that Hollywood find original, compelling, characters, who also happen to be a minority to show case instead of just changing the ones we already know and love.
