John Boyega Cast As Lead In Pacific Rim 2

There has been a lot of speculation as to weather or not there would be a sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. It was said to have been postponed indefinitely but then that it was still alive. It’s been several months since we’ve heard any other news on it until today. It has been officially confirmed that Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega has been cast as the lead role for Pacific Rim 2. This news pretty much came out of no where and I guess that means Charlie Hunnam is out then…Right?

According to Deadline Boyega will be playing the son of Idris Elba’s character Stacker Pentecost. The man himself director Guillermo del Toro had this to say about the casting choice; “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

I like this casting though I now wonder if there are still plans to have Charlie Hunnam reprise his role as Raleigh Becket or Rinko Kikuchi as Mako Mori. Either way Boyega is now the lead so this will be interesting to say the least. I definitely think it would cool to see all three of them team up to pilot giant robots and save the world. Pacific Rim 2 is set to begin filming later on this year.
