Xbox One Cross Network Feature Announced
It looks like we are taking one step closer to finally seeing an end to the console wars that we have come to know so well. Microsoft and Xbox executives announced at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) plans to include a new cross-network play feature. Basically this means that Xbox One owners can play games with PlayStation 4 and PC owners. Of all the gaming console company Microsoft has seemed to be the most gracious and even went so far to celebrate the success of their rival’s Sony and the PlayStation 4.
Taken from the Microsoft press release; First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks. As great as this sounds it does require Sony to actively participate in this new feature for it to work.
Sony and it’s PlayStation Network was not specifically named in this press release, but Microsoft did say there is “an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.” The first game to take advantage of the new cross-network feature will be Rocket League with possibly many more games to come. So far there has been no response from any of the other gaming console companies but hopefully Sony will set aside the competition for a moment and do what is best for the players. Ultimately, I think this is a great thing for gamers and gaming in general.
