Live Action Metroid Fan Film (Video)
Metroid: The Sky Calls is an awesome short film that was created by the same people that brought us the fan made Legend of Zelda movie trailer that IGN posted for April Fools day back in 2008. I’ve always wondered why we don’t see more fan service for Metroid as opposed to Legend of Zelda, Mario, and even Mega Man. After seeing this however, I can totally understand why we don’t. It takes a lot of work to do Samus and the planet Zebes justice.
Rainfall Films has done an amazing job bringing us a Metroid fan film that not only is visually stunning but also has a compelling plot. The short film stars Jessica Chobot (Nerdist) and runs just a little under 12 minutes. The only problem is right at the most interesting and mysterious point of the film is when we are left hanging and wanting more. I love the look of Samus’ armor and the way they kind of did the whole Iron Man type heads up display when showing her face inside the suit.
My only real complaint with this fan film is the decision to use some sort of grainy, sepia tone filter through out the entire film. I really wish they would have just given us a clear and bright look at Samus Aran and the world she is exploring. To me it’s just a little distracting and doesn’t quite fit the sleek future look and feel of Metroid. However, that is just my opinion and doesn’t take away from the fact that this is just plain awesome. I hope Nintendo takes a look at this and maybe inspires them to create an actual series or at least another game.
