Pacific Rim 2 Delayed Indefinitely
So for those of you (which includes me) that were looking forward to seeing giant Jaegers battle giant Kaiju again sometime in the near future, prepare to be disappointed. As much as I hate to be there bearer of bad news, Universal Pictures has announced that Pacific Rim 2 will be delayed indefinitely. This is some pretty disappointing news, but there is some good news as with it well. Universal Pictures and director Guillermo del Toro both have insisted that the film has not been canceled and will move forward at some point in the future.
Pacific Rim 2 was set to start filming in Toronto Canada early this year with a release date set for 2016. However, that was pushed back and set for sometime in 2017, and now there is no tentative release date in sight for the giant robot action film. There has been no official confirmation that any of the original cast members will return either, however Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, and Ron Perlman are speculated to return for the sequel.
As of now the reasons for all the delays is a mystery. Director Guillermo del Toro has recently stated that another project has his attention at the moment, but he is still fully committed to Pacific Rim 2. As popular as the first movie was it is still considered a bit of a box office bust, only being saved by the sales in the foreign market. In any case we do know that we will not be seeing this movie in theaters any time soon.
UPDATE: Universal Pictures released the following statement regarding Pacific Rim 2 “Legendary’s ‘Pacific Rim 2,’ originally scheduled for release on August 4, 2017, will be redated at a later time,” it reads. “The filmmakers, Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having ‘Pacific Rim 2,’ the sequel to 2013’s ‘Pacific Rim,’ which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of ‘Pacific Rim’ so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”
