Robotech Live Action Movie

I’ve always been a huge fan of giant robots and especially mech style anime. I know that everyone has a personal favorite and mine just so happens to be Robotech/Macross. The original series from the 80s was what really gave me my first taste of anime. I heard talk of a live action movie a couple years ago and possibly a new Macross anime series but that all just seemed to fall off the face of the earth. If a new series did come out I’m sure it was exclusive to Japan and I haven’t seen it. Well lucky for us it looks like the live action movie is back on and will be for US audiences.

For the longest time Harmony Gold held the rights to the Robotech license, then I guess it moved to Warner Bros. who did absolutely nothing with it, and now it appears that Sony has acquired the rights and is ready to move forward with a live action movie.  They are so ready in fact that the already have producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton, as well as writer Michael Gordon who all worked on the movie 300.

I love both but not many people know the differences, especially American audiences. In a recent statement regarding the Robotech movie Columbia Pictures chief Michael De Luca said, “we are so excited to be working with Mark and Gianni as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, Robotech offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless.

Honestly I think this is so exciting because right off the bat it sounds like they really get it. No doubt seeing giant mechs battle giant aliens (Pacific Rim) will be really bad ass, but it doesn’t mean shit if they get the story and characters wrong with this. Now I know I made a comparison to Pacific Rim, but honestly these two mech movies couldn’t be more different. The space combat of the veritechs should be really fast paced as opposed to the sluggish water combat of the jaegers in Pacific Rim. I only hope that they don’t stray too far from the original design of the mechs like Michael Bay did to our beloved Transformers.

WGVLRAll in all I am super excited about a live action Robotech movie and I can’t wait to hear more about it. As always I want to hear from you Nerd Nation. Are you excited for a Robotech movie and do you think Sony and Columbia pictures can do the series justice? Also, what do you think will be the most exciting thing to see in this movie?
