ScarJo to Star In Ghost In The Shell

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Scarlett Johansson will play the lead role in the up coming DreamWorks adaptation of Ghost in The Shell. Personally I can’t say I’m very excited about this. I’m not a big fan of hers like the rest of the world seems to be especially when she is playing the lead role in a film that is being based off of a Japanese manga and anime. I wrote about this a while back (a year ago to be exact) before we knew who would be the lead, and had almost completely forgotten about this movie until today. Now that we know who will be staring in this film there isn’t much else exciting to say. The director hasn’t changed. It’s still going to be Rupert Sanders who directed Snow White and the Huntsman. Honestly I think this would have been better suited to someone like the The Wachowski Brothers but I was holding out hope that Rupert Sanders would bring something new and refreshing to the big screen. However, I get the feeling with his casting choice that we are in store for a watered down version that is essentially a box office cash grab. I can’t really imagine that fans of the manga or original animated films will be happy about Scarlett Johansson playing the role of Motoko Kusanagi.

For those of you that might not be familiar with Ghost in the Shell, it is a manga Created by Masamune Shirow that follows the story of Motoko Kusanagi, a member of a covert counter cyber-terrorist organization, which specializes in fighting technology related crime in mid-21st century Japan. Something tells me this is just going to be Total Recall (the 2012 one) all over again. Meaning Hollywood has given over control of a classic to an under skilled director, who chose a leading Hollywood actor/actress to play their lead purely for the name recognition…But then again I could be wrong.

Anyways, I want to know what you think about this casting choice Nerd Nation. Do you think DreamWorks and Scarlett Johansson can do justice to what is arguably one of the best anime/manga series out there, or do you think that fans of the series will be disappointed with another Hollywood adaptation?
