TMNT Creator Doesn’t Like New Turtles

OK, you know you “done Fucked up” when the original creators won’t back up your re-design of their work. In fact I always hated how it seemed like artist and writers would always be so humbled that their work go turned into a movie that they would never have anything negative to say about it. All the while fans would immediately be villainized if they weren’t completely happy with the big screen adaptation. Well I’ve taken my share of criticism for where I stand on the new TMNT movie, but even one of the original creators agrees with me, at least about how they look.

In an interview with Comic Book Movie, artist Peter Laird let them know exactly what he thinks about the new look of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that he helped create back in 1984.

Taken from the Comic Book Movie interview;

“the changes to the basic design of the Turtles seemed to me to fall into the “fixing what is not broken” category. It’s altogether possible that, in the context of this new movie, these designs will work well and not seem so odd, but I still point to what Jim Henson’s “Creature Shop” team did with their rendering of the Turtles in rubber and paint as the best translation (in live action, anyway) of the Turtles as Kevin Eastman and I created them.”

“It may just be a personal preference of mine — and one informed by twenty-five years with the Turtles as co-creator working on those green dudes but the extra “stuff” added to the Turtles’ outfits just seems extraneous to me, and a bit silly in spots (I mean, thin bamboo armor for a Turtle’s shell?). Maybe it will work, but right now, I don’t see it. I prefer the simpler versions.”

Pretty interesting if you ask me. Peter went on to say that the new faces look “too human” and he prefers the “noseless beak” look because it is so instantly recognizable. Again, I have to agree with him and I tend to believe that he actually hates this new look a bit more than he is letting on. I think he is being as nice as possible in an effort to stay professional. Anyways, I want to know what you think Nerd Nation. Do you agree with original creator Peter Laird or do you prefer the new look of the turtles over the old? Leave me your thoughts in a comment below or on the Facebook page.
