Is The Rock the Next Conan?!?!

I think it’s pretty safe to say that the 2011 adaptation of Conan the Barbarian was pretty horrible and left us yearning for the days of a juiced up Austrian who spoke poor English, but was actually tough. So after 2 years I think we have finally been able to bury the memories of that 2011 disaster and look forward to something new. In a recent interview with I am Rogue Arnold Schwarzenegger talked about the new Conan movie.(Quoted from I am Rogue)

Schwarzenegger singled out Milius’ 1982 film as a model for the new effort in explaining just how the new Conan came about at Universal, saying;

Let me just say that a lot of it has to do with timing. That’s what show business and politics have in common. It’s a lot of it is timing, and I think that I would’ve chosen to do Conan already if it would’ve been ready, but the Universal studio just bought the rights to Conan, they have an executive over there that happens to be a big believer in bringing back that character.

I think this is definitely good news for fans of Conan. Though Arnold is obviously past his prime it is always nice when directors take us back to what made the original movies so popular. It remains to be seen who will take over the role as the young Conan but Mr. Shwarzenegger had a pretty interesting suggestion in Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Some of you may remember the 2003 film “The Run Down” where old Arnie passed the proverbial torch to the up and coming action star in an uncredited cameo. In that same interview Arnold said;

“I think it would be great for him, for The Rock to play the earlier generation and me the later generation. I’m looking forward to that.”

My own 2 cents on this suggestion might not be very popular. Though The Rock might be a great action start (yes i do like his movies) I don’t think he would be a good fit for Conan. Something tells me it would just be The Scorpion King 2 only starring The Rock this time. Most likely they would get some relatively unknown actor to play the comic relief and buddy him up with Conan, and it would pretty much be what we’ve already seen. I could be wrong, but what do you think? If the Rock were to play the new Conan would you see it or would you pass?
